Self-Loading Crane Delivery

The Lorry Loads Itself, Drives, and Unloads Itself

No forklift at the supplier. No crane at the destination. No second vehicle, no second operator, no waiting for kit to arrive. One lorry, one operator, one fixed price — anywhere in the UK.

Why Self-Loading Changes the Cost of a Delivery

A normal heavy delivery is three jobs pretending to be one. There is the haulage cost — a vehicle big enough to carry the load between two points. There is the loading cost — a forklift or crane at the supplier's end. And there is the unloading cost — a forklift or crane at the destination, often hired separately from a third party who is unfamiliar with the load. Each of those is its own invoice. Each of those introduces its own scheduling risk. A self-loading crane delivery merges all three into one. The lorry IS the crane. The driver IS the operator. The price you receive is the whole price.

Mechanically, the term "self-loading" describes a lorry with a hydraulic crane permanently mounted to the chassis, usually directly behind the cab. The crane folds away for transit, deploys via stabiliser legs at both ends of the journey, and lifts loads either onto or off the flatbed deck behind it. The same equipment is sometimes called a HIAB (after the original manufacturer), a lorry-mounted crane, or a lorry loader — they are the same idea. What matters is the practical outcome: the vehicle does not need anything waiting for it on either side of the journey.

We see customers find this kind of service after they have tried to organise a job the conventional way and run into avoidable cost or delay. A buyer purchasing a second-hand machine from a seller without a forklift; a site with no plant on it yet that needs welfare units and a generator delivered; a homeowner buying a hot tub that the supplier will hand over at their yard but not place in the garden; a fabricator with steel waiting on the bench but no crane on the day a contractor wants it. In every case the self-loading vehicle solves the bottleneck without adding a second supplier to the chain.

The service runs nationwide from our Kent base. Pricing is a flat job-price rather than an hourly rate plus extras, which makes it easy to compare against quotes for a haulier plus separate lift. The same vehicle covers our wider nationwide HIAB delivery work and our regional self-loading crane hire for site visits within Kent. If you are not sure which service fits the job, send the details and we will tell you.

Ideal Use Cases

Self-loading delivery is the right call when at least one of these is true:

  • The supplier has the item, but no forklift to load it onto a normal flatbed
  • The destination has no on-site lifting equipment ready for the load
  • The load needs lifting over a wall, fence, scaffold or other obstacle
  • The site is being set up and no plant or machinery is on it yet
  • Hiring a separate crane and a separate vehicle would double the cost
  • Two separate suppliers would mean two separate invoices and timing risk
  • The customer wants a single fixed price for the whole job
  • The item is too heavy for a tail-lift but well within a HIAB's range

Operator and Equipment Standards

🏫

ALLMI CSCS Certified

Lorry loader work is its own specialism and ALLMI CSCS is the recognised qualification. Every one of our operators holds the card in date.

LOLER Examined Crane

A self-loading crane is regulated lifting equipment. Ours is examined to LOLER on schedule with full paperwork held against the vehicle.

📅

Family-Run Since 1975

Two generations of running self-loading lorries. A lot of the institutional knowledge of how to lift cleanly comes from that depth of experience.

🛡️

Fully Insured

Goods-in-transit and public liability cover applies both to the journey and to the lifts at each end — so the whole job is insured under one policy.
